Friday Favorites- Recommendations & My Favorite Authors

Friday is back again! So I’ve been home for almost a week now (6 days to be exact) yet I still feel so behind. I have yet to get to some comments and haven’t had time to read all my favorites blogs like I usually do. Ever since we got back from our trip we’ve been in packing mode. I’m wrapping, taping, and moving things and boxes around all day.

We still have a little while before we take off at the end of October, but in between then we have two trips coming up (to North Carolina and a road trip to Zion National Park in Utah) and lots of stuff planned in between (including going to tv tapings of Conan and Jimmy Kimmel yay!) So we’ve got to get a head start on the packing, because we all know how l o n g it takes!the-new-you

By far one of my favorite moments of this week was getting to meet Mindy Kaling! I really can’t believe it still. I’m so happy I have this picture to remind me of this awesome moment. She is such a great voice for women, minorities, and female comedians. I’ve always loved her and I’m even more obsessed with her now than I was before if that’s possible 🙂 And if you aren’t already read her books!

I didn’t take any pictures but on Tuesday night I went to see Cheryl Strayed speak at Chapman University. She is such an eloquent speaker and I am so glad I got to see her in person. For those of you who don’t know, she is the author of Wild. She is quite a popular lady, the auditorium she spoke at She is such an inspiration. I love her story and her book. It was one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it.

I’d love to see part of the Pacific Crest Trail (the one she hiked) once we move up to Washington, even though she did the California and Oregon part. I love seeing powerful women like Mindy and Cheryl getting things done!

Next Wednesday Dave and I are taking off to North Carolina for the first time ever. We are going to visit Dave’s best friend and we were also invited to a friend’s wedding who we will be living near once we move to Seattle. We will be in the Chapel Hill area as well as Bald Head Island.

I would love your suggestions of places we should go to while we are in town. I will of course do some research but would love to get some insider tips if you girls have any for me!

While we are on the topic of giving suggestions I’d also love to hear your tips for moving. I’ve done my fair share of moving in my day, but I feel like there are so many tricks that I may be missing out on. What moving company did you use? How did you organize everything? What would you do differently? So let’s hear it ladies!

People Magazine posted an article online about Elizabeth Gilbert sharing her secret to  happiness with the man who put ‘love’ in Eay, Pray, Love. I love her as an author and she’s also a great speaker. Did you guys see her on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday? She is wonderful and she’s such a great role model for women empowerment.

Happy Friday girls! And thanks again to everyone who linked up with Mattie and I yesterday! Hope you all have nice weekends!

As always I’m linking up with these lovelies:

  1. So cool you got to see Mindy Kaling and hear Cheryl Strayed speak!!! I’ve still YET to read Wild but it’s on my list … once you move up here you can see that trail and so many more 😉

    1. You HAVE to read Wild it’s so inspirational and awesome! One of my favorite parts was that she wasn’t an expert hiker when she did the trail, gives us all hope that we could do something that epic too!

  2. My Urban Family

I don’t have too many moving tips for you, but I’m for sure stopping back to see what everyone else says!!

The one thing I did that was amazing was keep all of our clothes on hangers and just put large garbage bags over the top with the pull ties around the handles of the hangers. That only works if you move them yourself though.

Sounds like you have such a fun month ahead of you!

    1. We will definitely be moving stuff ourselves and not getting movers, we really dont have that much furniture. Yes definitely looking forward to some more travel this month 🙂 happy weekend!

  3. I want to read Elizabeth Gilbert’s new book- she’s so fantastic! As far as moving advice…ours involved air, sea and storage stickers that were not paid attention to at all so M’s mattress ended up on the ship and her infant tub ended up on the airplane. So I guess the advice would be, if you use movers, pay attention to what the movers are doing! 😉 Have a great weekend!

    1. I originally wanted to go to an event where she was speaking, but if I had I definitely wouldn’t have been able to take a picture with her! She’s so popular so many of her events sold out!

    1. I love them so I look on their websites for events and stuff. Luckily they come to LA a lot of the time for press tours, hopefully they’ll come to Seattle too once I move 🙂

And yes I’m so excited for NC and to see what everyone is always talking about!

  4. You met Mindy? You are so lucky! She is the best!

We just recently moved and some advice that I have is to keep boxes for every room separate, absolutely no mixing, even if a box is not full. Next piece of advice is label, label, label. Assign each box a number, then on a spread sheet write the number and what room it goes in and what is in the box. Also on the box write in really big letters what room the box needs to be put in. This way the movers can set all of the boxes in the correct rooms when they move them in and you wont have to rearrange boxes when you unpack.
    Have a great weekend!

  5. Girl are you for real?! Mindy, Cheryl Strayed, Kimmel and Conan?! You are living my dream life. And going to North Carolina! I’m sure it’s beautiful there.

    1. Hah! It’s only because all that stuff happens in LA/ Southern California and is super accessible!

You’re getting married! You’ve studied abroad in Australia! You live in the beautiful PNW! That’s all so awesome and exciting!!

  6. Megan

I’m so out of the loop on these authors but I will have to check out Wild! Is that their venue?! If so, that is gorgeous! North Carolina is on my list to visit someday. I’ve never made any huge moves so I don’t really have any tips other than making sure to label all boxes! Or keeping a note on your phone as to where stuff is (if possible).

    1. Yes I love Wild so much! I think you will too.

That pic was of the University of North Carolina, looks so pretty. Our friends are getting married on Bald Head Island which looks gorgeous!

Yes I for sure need to start writing down what is in each box it will save so much fun!

  7. Sophia Rodriguez

You’ve got a busy month ahead of you! Everything sounds pretty exciting though, minus packing! Have a great weekend! (:

  8. Melissa @ Always, Lissa

I’ve seen the book Wild but haven’t read it before. I’ll have to look into it because everyone keeps talking about it. I’ve heard that Mindy Kaling is completely awesome in person. I’m glad you got to meet her! I miss So Cal, but I love Seattle. I think you’ll quite enjoy it here 🙂

    1. Yes Melissa you should really read it! It’s so, so good! I’d love to hear your thoughts after.

      Mindy is amazing!

So fun that you’re in Seattle too! I am so very excited to make the move. There are a lot of places I want to see and things to do!

heading over now to check out your blog! Thanks for stopping by and commenting today!
